VR 360 EDITOR

What if we could empower users to easily edit 360 videos inside a VR environment?

Samsung wanted to promote 360 videos, a new media format in the Virtual Reality ecosystem.

The idea was to provide users with a tool to edit and share 360 videos in a VR environment.

We had the challenge to Design and Develop a proof of concept of a unique VR product.

A challenge within a challenge

As a relatively new medium, 360 videos raised many questions related to user scenarios, profile ,and value to users.

In addition, Virtual Reality was maturing and brought up immense challenges as designing interactions was experimentation-driven.

Co-creation with users as a foundation

User research, UI Design, and Development were synchronized to connect research findings, Design concepts (based on co-creation), and incremental (Improvement-driven) development cycles.

PRODUCT DISCOVERY

  • The initial features set was based on co-creation activities.

USER RESEARCH

  • Continuous validation, both in the concept and development phases.

UI DESIGN

  • Continuous co-creation with users driven by development cycles.

DEVELOPMENT

  • Incremental releases

  • Planned to support improvements based on users' feedback during the project.

The project was planned in 5 phases:

UNDERSTANDING, IDEATION, DEFINITION,  CONCEPTING and DEVELOPMENT.

UNDERSTANDING

Diary studies were conducted to sketch a first draft of the user journey

OBJECTIVE

  • Identify the user journey, contexts of use, aspects of motivation, pain points and expectations about the 360 video editing process.

METHODOLOGY

  • Diary studies were conducted with 6 users

OUTCOMES

  • Existing user journey draft

IDEATION

Co-creation workshops with users were run to design the desired user journey, product vision, initial features set and UI insights

OBJECTIVE

  • Validate and prioritize product features

  • Identify potential new features

  • Co-create UI ideas based on suggested features

ACTIVITIES
  • In depth Competitor Analysis

  • User Journey and UI Co-creation workshops

  • Propose elements of experience and empathy map

OUTCOMES
  • Proposed user journey

  • Initial features estimation and prioritization

  • Product vision

  • UI insights and ideas set

DEFINITION

Workshops with the Development team were held to get everyone on the same page and create a first product backlog version.
OBJECTIVE
  • Get all team members on the same page and plan the next steps.

  • Features estimation and prioritization (considering the user value, business value, and development effort).

ACTIVITIES
  • Features estimation and prioritization workshop with the team

OUTCOMES
  • Initial  features estimation and  prioritization

  • Product Backlog

CONCEPTING

We finally answered the necessary questions to Design a User Interface.
OBJECTIVE
  • Design UI proposals in two phases: the first one with 2 concept proposals and the second one with a more mature and refined design.

ACTIVITIES
  • Lean UI benchmarking

  • UI sketching

  • VR Scenario sketching

OUTCOMES
  • UI concepts and proposal, mood boards, main views and interaction sketches.

DEVELOPMENT

With the backlog set up, the Development team was gathered and a first release was developed in an agile SCRUM framework.
UI Design one sprint ahead

  • User stories were written, estimated, and described with UI drafts as guide to the developers previously to the current sprint.

  •  Along with the development of the features in the sprint, workshops with Designers and Developers were conducted to gather ideas for micro-interactions to be developed in the next sprint user stories.

UX Research  two sprints ahead

  • Interviews with users were also conducted to further detail features and guide the UI Design

Results

The team finished the MVP phase and the project was put on hold due to strategy redirection.

On the other hand, the Product and UX Design processes based on co-creation and collaboration with  users and the team has proven to be valid in a scenario full of uncertainties.
